Mr Oakeshott asked the Minister representing the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, in writing, on 12 February 2008:

(1)   Is the Minister or his department considering any aspect of the issue of payment of fees to record labels that radio stations pay for playing their recordings.

(2)   Does the Minister view the principle of local content an important one to protect within any cultural consideration of content.


Mr Albanese (Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government) —The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy has provided the following answer to the honourable member’s question:

(1)   The Minister and the Department have received representations from various stakeholders on this issue and are considering these representations.

(2)   The Broadcasting Service Act 1992 (BSA) has a requirement to promote the role of broadcasting services in developing and reflecting a sense of Australian identity, character and cultural diversity. This requirement is an important element of the regulatory scheme.
