Dr Southcott asked the Minister for Education, in writing, on 13 November 2008:

In respect of the 2008-09 Budget measure to remove course fees for child care diplomas and advanced diplomas for up to 8000 people studying at a TAFE institute or other government training provider: will this initiative be made available to privately owned institutions delivering government funded training programs; if not, what action is the Government taking to ensure competition in the training sector is maintained for these courses.

Mr Brendan O’Connor (Minister for Employment Participation) —The answer to the honourable member’s question is as follows:

The Government’s election commitment was to remove TAFE fees for diplomas and advanced diplomas of Children’s Services at TAFE and other Government training providers.

This commitment is designed to encourage students to undertake the specified courses in early childhood. The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations will monitor the progress of this initiative.
