Mr Melham asked the Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, in writing, on 10 November 2008:

To date, what costs have been incurred by the Office of the Workplace Ombudsman in the case of Unsworth v Tristar Steering and Suspension Australia Limited for: (a) solicitors; and (b) counsel.


Ms Gillard (Minister for Education, Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations and Minister for Social Inclusion) —The answer to the honourable member’s question is as follows:

In the matter of Unsworth v Tristar Steering and Suspension Australia Limited the Workplace Ombudsman has incurred $968,984 in costs for solicitors and $393,729 in costs on counsel.

The Workplace Ombudsman’s investigation and litigation activities in relation to this matter has helped to secure over $4.3 million in redundancy payments owed to vulnerable workers.
