Mr Truss asked the Minister representing the Minister for Climate Change and Water, in writing, on 15 September 2008:

In respect of the Government’s proposed Emissions Trading Scheme, will the Minister provide a list of the names of the 1000 companies that will be directly affected by the scheme.

Mr Swan (Treasurer) —The Minister for Climate Change and Water has provided the following answer to the honourable member’s question:

This number is an initial estimate informed by analysis undertaken for the Government in development of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting System, as well as for the former Task Group on Emissions Trading and Department of Climate Change analysis.

More accurate estimates of the number of liable entities will be possible following registrations under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007. The Government does not have a list of names of the 1000 companies for the reasons stated.
