Mr Murphy asked the Treasurer, upon notice, on 18 September 2003:

(1) Further to the answer to question No. 1571 (Hansard, 18 August 2003, page 18805) why is the information in relation to the number of extraordinary general meetings called in each of the last five years by shareholders of public companies compared to those initiated by the boards of public companies, not available.

(2) Is the Minister's department able to provide an estimate; if not, why not.

Mr Costello (Treasurer) —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) Public companies are not obliged to report this type of information to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission or equivalent authority.

(2) No. Statistics upon which an estimate may be reasonably based are not available.
