Mr MURPHY (1:58 PM) —I have just learned that two St George Bank branches in my electorate of Lowe—in Burwood and one St George ATM service in Drummoyne—are to close. Mr Speaker, you will doubtless recall my campaign in relation to the 14 major bank closures which have occurred in my electorate. As you know, the big banks are only interested in making profits for their shareholders and providing obscene salary packages for their directors. They are only interested in flogging the customers with similarly obscene levels of fees and charges.

Once again, I want to stand up for Bendigo Bank and encourage more community banks, which really look after people and are interested in the customers. I want to record that we have two Bendigo Bank community banks in Lowe—in Homebush and Strathfield—and they are very successful. We are soon to get other banks, in Croydon Park and Haberfield. The way of the future is to have more community banks, which are interested in people, not profits. As I said, the four major banks are only interested in profits, providing obscene salary packages to the directors and charging ridiculous levels of fees and charges. So three cheers for Bendigo Bank and community banks.
