To the Honourable the Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives assembled in parliament:

The petition of certain citizens of Australia draws to the attention of the House the detention of asylum seekers in camps in Australia and the Pacific Islands.

Such detention policies are unworthy of a country that holds itself out as a fair and civilised society.

Prolonged and abusive detention causes physical and emotional trauma to all asylum seekers regardless of the ultimate legitimacy of their claims.

Whatever the political persuasion of a democratic government, it has a responsibility to provide moral and ethical leadership. injustice to asylum seekers undermines justice for all Australians.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to

l. Replace the present Minister, The Hon. Philip Ruddock MP with a new Minister who understands the horror and stupidity of mis-treating and torturing people from any country.

2. Ensure asylum seekers claims are speedily and efficiently processed.

3. Replace concentrated incarceration in detent-ion centres for accommodation that is suit-able for children, adults and families.
