Mr McMULLAN —My question is to the Minister representing the Minister for Industry, Science and Resources and relates to the housing industry. Is the minister aware that the government's modeller of choice, Chris Murphy, has prepared confidential advice for the housing industry on the impact of the tax package on housing prices? Is he aware that, according to Mr Murphy, the GST will increase the cost of an average Sydney house by $15,128 and increase the monthly mort gage repayment by $84? Doesn't this show that even first home buyers who qualify for the $7,000 First Home Owners Scheme will be out of pocket?

Mr MOORE (Defence) —One thing I am aware of is that the government has reduced monthly payments on housing by $350 a month. That is a direct consequence of government policy. If the GST and the total tax package are passed by the Labor Party in the Senate, all Australian householders will be better off.
