Mr McGauran (Arts and the Centenary of Federation) —The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts has provided the following answer to the honourable member's question :

(1)—(4) Neither the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts nor a representative attended the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) awards or the Pacific Circle Music Convention. There are no records of an invitation for the Minister or any of his staff to either the ARIA Awards nor the Pacific Circle Music Convention in the Minister's Office. The Pacific Circle Music Convention took place on 15—18 October 1998, before the Prime Minister had announced portfolio responsibilities on 18 October 1998. The ARIA awards occurred on the same day as the Minister was sworn in by the Governor General (21 October 1998).
