Mr Kelvin Thomson asked the Minister for Trade, upon notice, on 1 October 1997:

Has his attention been drawn to comments attributed to him in the Australian Financial Review on 18 September 1997 regarding the provision of social security and other payments to urban residents as opposed to country residents; if so, does he have evidence of the sums of social security and other benefits being paid to residents of (a) Toorak, Vic., and Vaucluse, NSW, and (b) country and regional areas; if so, what.

Mr Tim Fischer (Trade; Deputy Prime Minister) —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:


(a) Yes.

(b) Yes.
