(Question No. 5104)

Mr Coleman asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, upon notice, on 20 February 1987:

Is he able to say whether the Soviet Union has transformed the naval bases at Cam Ranh Bay into its largest naval base for forward deployment outside the Warsaw Pact.

Mr Hayden —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

I would refer the honourable member to Mr Beazley's answer to a question without notice on 26 February (Hansard, page 805). This contains a useful summary of Soviet activity in the Pacific, including at Cam Ranh Bay. My answer to question No. 3544 (Hansard, House of Representatives, 14.10.86, page 1984) also contains information on Soviet naval activity at Cam Ranh Bay.
