Mr CONQUEST —by leave-On behalf of the Joint Committee of Public Accounts, I present the 265th report of the Committee, the response to report 232-report of the Auditor-General, May 1983.

Ordered that the report be printed.

Mr CONQUEST —On 28 May 1985 the Committee presented its 232nd report on the report of the Auditor-General-May 1983. This report, the 265th from the Committee, sets out the response to its findings in report 232. For the most part the items discussed in the Committee's earlier report have elicited a satisfactory response, including the issue of pension overpayments by the Department of Social Security. This matter is currently being systematically addressed by progressive implementation of the national overpayments action plan.

The only remaining issue concerned the role of the Auditor-General and the bounds of his responsibilities, particularly in relation to commercially trading public enterprises. The Committee felt that this was an issue which needed clarification. When the House of Representatives completes its inquiry into the general issue of efficiency reviews in the public sector, the Committee will decide whether to pursue the matter further. I commend the report to honourable members.
