Mr Coleman asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, upon notice, on 18 February 1987:

(1) How many official visits to Australia have been made by delegations of Soviet and Eastern Bloc academics, journalists and artists in 1985 and 1986?

(2) What was the nature of the visit in each case?

Mr Hayden —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) (a) Academics, 4; (b) Journalists, nil; (c) Artists, nil.

(2) A two person delegation from the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences undertook a study visit to a number of Australian Universities in October 1985. A three person Education delegation visited Australia in June 1985 to study education in Australia. An academic taught Russian language at Melbourne and Monash Universities during 1986. An acacemic taught Russian language at the ANU and Queensland universities during 1986.
