(Question No. 5272)


Mr Hodgman asked the Prime Minister, upon notice, on 2 April 1987:

(1) Has Government funding been made available to a group known as People For Equality Not Institutionalisation (PENI).

(2) Is he able to say whether Government funding to PENI has been channelled through the Victorian Government.

(3) Does he know whether a person with the surname of Hogg has allegedly been active in obtaining funds and equipment for the group.

(4) Has his attention been drawn to claims made by Martin Stewart and Rene Kalwet that they know him personally.

(5) Is he able to say whether persons connected with the group are claiming credit for the illegal tapping of a certain private telephone conversation.

(6) Does he approve of action of this kind.


Mr Hawke —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) and (2) No Commonwealth Government funds have been made available to the group known as People For Equality Not Institutionalisation.

(3) No.

(4) I am not acquainted with either person.

(5) I am only aware of what has been claimed in recent media reports.

(6) If the honourable member is referring to illegal tapping of telephone conversations, I do not in any way approve of such action.
