Mr BEALE(12.19) —Again, I thank the Minister for Housing and Construction (Mr West) for making available to me the details of this motion. The Opposition supports the proposal to upgrade our nation's surveillance and intelligence facilities and regards these as part of the first line of defence for our nation. The Minister refers to the need to construct 18 houses or townhouses and in this respect I refer him again to the dire condition of much of Defence Force housing. I trust that these houses will be of an appropriate standard.

I also refer the Minister to the comment he made about design work for the project having been undertaken by his Department with some contract support. Again, I urge that in future he optimise the role of the private sector in this sort of design work. The Opposition supports the motion for the referral to the Joint Committee on Public Works of the upgrading of the Jindalee facilities at Alice Springs.

Question resolved in the affirmative.
