(Question No. 5132)

Mr Wright asked the Minister representing the Special Minister of State, upon notice, on 23 February 1987:

(1) Is he able to say how many drug raids have been made in Queensland by:

(a) Australian Federal Police; and

(b) Queensland Police.

(2) How many of the successful drug operations involved:

(a) marihuana; and

(b) heroin, cocaine or other hard drugs.

Mr Young —The Special Minister of State has provided the following answer to the honourable member's question:

(1) (a) and (b) There is uncertainty as to the specific meaning of the term `drug raid'. Information on drug seizures in Queensland held by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) includes all seizures made under Commonwealth law, including those by the Australian Customs Service.

The AFP does not hold information relating to the number of Queensland Police drug seizures. This is a matter which should be raised with the Queensland Minister for Police.

AFP records show: 174 seizures in 1985, 116 seizures in 1986.

(2) (a) 120 seizures in 1985, 77 seizures in 1986. These figures include seizures of cannabis, cannabis resin, cannabis seeds and cannabis oil.

Other prohibited substances...

* Two of these seizures are awaiting analysis.

There is a difference between the total number of seizures of various drugs and the total number of seizures for the year. This is due to the fact that some seizures comprised more than one type of drug and, on analysis, some substances seized were found not to be prohibited.
