Madam SPEAKER —I inform the House that Mr Robert Thomas Martin retired from the position of Assistant Principal Parliamentary Reporter on 5 January last. Mr Martin began his reporting career in South Australia in 1943. He served with the Australian Imperial Force and worked as a court reporter based in Adelaide and Melbourne before being appointed to the Commonwealth Hansard staff as a reporter in August 1962. His career at Hansard took him through all the reporting, editorial and administrative positions, culminating in his appointment as Assistant Principal Parliamentary Reporter in January 1985. Mr Martin won respect and appreciation from all senators and members, and on their behalf I thank him for his services to the Parliament and wish him and his wife well in his retirement. Mr B. A. Harris has been appointed to succeed him as Assistant Principal Parliamentary Reporter.
