(Question No. 4973)

Mr Shipton asked the Treasurer, upon notice, on 28 November 1986:

Has he received a request for tax deductible status from the Australian Trust for Conservation Volunteers, Ballarat, Vic.; if so, will he support the request.

Mr Keating —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

A request by the Australian Trust for Conservation Volunteers for access to the gift deduction provisions was considered during the deliberation preceding the 1986-87 Budget. Regrettably, the Government, although appreciative of the valuable work done by the Trust, was unable to extend the gift deduction provisions to include it as that time. In reaching that decision the Government was obliged to take into account similar requests from many other very worthy organisations as well as the general requirement for restraint in Budget outlays.
