(Question No. 4886)


Mr Price asked the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 13 November 1986:

(1) How many applications for the Defence Force Service Medal have yet to be assessed for eligibility in each of the 3 branches of the Armed Forces.

(2) How many awards have yet to be submitted to the Governor-General for approval.

(3) Are the awards submitted to the Governor-General for approval in order of application or in the order in which the applicant was assessed as being eligible.

(4) What action is being taken to reduce the backlog of approvals.


Mr Beazley —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) Navy-nil. Army-nil. Air Force-257.

(2) Navy-100. Army-162. Air Force-cannot be determined until eligibility of the 257 referred to above is assessed.

(3) Navy and Army-in order of receipt of application. Air Force-in the order in which the person was assessed as being eligible.

(4) Navy and Army have no backlog. Air Force expects to eliminate its backlog by January 1987.
