Mr Campbell asked the Treasurer, upon notice, on 3 June 1986:

(1) Who were the Treasury officials that visited the Western Australian goldfields in November 1971 as part of the review of the gold subsidy.

(2) Were the findings of these officials made public.


Mr Keating —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) An extensive search of Treasury files has not located any records relating to a visit by Treasury officers to Western Australian goldfields in November 1971 as part of a review of the gold subsidy. Three former Treasury officers, Dr R. J. Cameron CB, Mr C. W. Conron and Mr J. H. Garrett CBE, recall having visited Western Australia, possibly at about that time, in the course of investigating matters which may have included the gold subsidy.
