Mr Nehl asked the Minister for Social Security, upon notice, on 27 November 1986:

(1) Did the number of invalid pensions granted in 1985-86 increase from 259,162 to 273,814.

(2) How many invalid pensions were granted in each State and Territory (a) prior to and (b) during 1985-86.

(3) Did the number of spouse carer pensions for the spouse carers of invalid pensioners increase from 75,855 to 83,212 in 1985-86.

(4) How many spouse carer pensions were granted in each State and Territory (a) prior to and (b) during 1985-86.

(5) How many invalid pensions granted in each State and Territory in 1985-86 were granted on grounds other than an 85 per cent permanent medical disability.

(6) How many spouse carer pensions granted in each State and Territory in 1985-86 were granted to the spouse carers of invalid pensioners with other than an 85 per cent permanent medical disability.

(7) Upon what grounds, other than an 85 per cent permanent medical disability, will his Department grant an invalid pension.

(8) How many invalid pensions were granted in each State and Territory in 1985-86 for less than an 85 per cent permanent medical disability.

(9) How many spouse carer pensions were granted in each State and Territory in 1985-86 to the spouse carers of invalid pensioners with less than an 85 per cent permanent medical disability.


Mr Howe —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) No. The number of invalid pensions granted (including transfers from other pensions) in 1985-86 was 47,095. The corresponding figure for 1984-85 was 49,495. The numbers of persons being paid invalid pension at 30 June 1985 and 30 June 1986 were 259,162 and 273,810 respectively.

(2) The following table shows the numbers of persons being paid invalid pension at these two dates by State and Territory; the numbers of grants during the years ended 30 June 1985 and 30 June 1986 are shown in brackets.

(4) The following table shows the number of recipients of wife's and spouse carer's/carer's pension by State/Territory at 30 June 1985 and 30 June 1986; the bracketed figures refer to the number of such pensions granted during the years ended 30 June 1985 and 30 June 1986.
