(Question No. 4982)


Mr Hunt asked the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, upon notice, on 28 November 1986:

(1) Has he taken any action in 1986 which would affect the continued operation of the Gwydir Property Aboriginal Corporation (GPAC).

(2) Has the GPAC complied with all instructions made to it by the Registrar of the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act over the last 4 years.

(3) Is he critical of any aspect of the GPAC's administration; if so, what is the criticism.

(4) What steps did he take to discuss any criticism with representatives of the GPAC.

(5) Has the Central Northern Area office of his Department received requests for assistance from the GPAC during 1986; if so, what action has been taken on these requests.

(6) Has his Department sought to ensure that the GPAC enjoys maximum autonomy in the administration of its affairs.


Mr Holding —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) No.

(2) No, and as a result an investigation under section 68 of the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976 was undertaken by the Registrar in 1984.

(3) The Registrar concluded from his investigation that the affairs of the Corporation had not been conducted in a satisfactory manner.

(4) The findings of the Registrar were referred to members of the Committee of the Corporation and suitable remedial arrangements are being put in place.

(5) No.

(6) Yes.
