(Question No. 4777)

Mr Braithwaite asked the Minister for Trade, upon notice, on 16 October 1986:

(1) How many inquiries has the Australian Trade Commission received regarding admission to the Bond Corporation's proposed private university on the Gold Coast.

(2) From which countries did these inquiries originate.

(3) What is Australia's estimate of the (a) projected overseas Market for this type of institution, (b) amount of income such a university would bring into Australia and (c) effect on our invisibles deficit.

Mr Dawkins —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) The Australian Trade Commission has not received any specific inquiries regarding admission to the proposed private university. When the matter was first reported in the press a few general inquiries were received but officers of the Commission were unable to add anything to what had been reported on the subject.

(2) Due to the general nature of the inquiries no records were kept as to their number and origin.

(3) In the absence of precise information regarding the courses which might be offered, the acceptability overseas of the degrees to be conferred, the cost of the various courses and the cost of residential accommodation if any, it is not possible to provide the estimates sought in the question.
