(Question No. 4735)

Mr Burr asked the Minister representing the Minister for Education, upon notice, on 8 October 1986:

(1) Is AMC Search Limited a subsidiary company of the Australian Maritime College.

(2) Does the company use the equipment of the college to provide a commercial consultancy for research in maritime and design problems.

(3) Does the company reimburse the college for use of the equipment.

(4) Is the Minister aware of similar companies operating in Australia without access to federally funded equipment.

Mr Dawkins —The Minister for Education has provided the following answer to the honourable member's question:

(1) AMC Search Limited is a company limited by guarantee and as such has no share holders. The Australian Maritime College Council appoints the Members and Directors of the Company and therefore under the provisions of paragraph 7(1)(a)(i) of the Companies Act 1981 the Company becomes a subsidiary of the College.

(2) The Company does use the equipment of the College to provide a commercial consultancy for research in maritime and maritime related design problems.

(3) The Company pays the College commercial rates for the hire of its equipment and the profits of the Company are donated to the College. The cost of the use of the equipment is met by the Company and is not charged against the College operating budget.

(4) I am not aware of any companies associated with tertiary education institutions in Australia and undertaking maritime consultancy and research which do not have access to federally funded equipment.
