(Question No. 4650)

Mr Coleman asked the Minister for Communications, upon notice, on 22 September 1986:

Did the ABC co-fund a poll of West Bank opinion with a pro-PLO newspaper for the Four Corners program The Palestinians of 8 September 1986; if so, what was the ABC's contribution to the cost of the poll.

Mr Duffy —The following answer to the honourable member's question is based upon information provided by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation:

The ABC was an equal partner with the New York newspaper Newsday and the Palestinian newspaper Al-Fajr in Funding a public opinion poll of Palestinian residents of the West Bank and the Gaza. The results of the poll were used on ABC News and Current Affairs programs but the poll was mainly conducted for a ``Four Corners'' program on the Palestinians broadcast on 8 September. The ABC's contribution to the cost of the Poll was $US2100.
