Mr HOWARD —I ask the Treasurer: How many discussions personally or by telephone has he had with the Commissioner of Taxation, the Deputy Commissioner of Taxation or any other senior officers of the Australian Taxation Office regarding his failure to lodge his 1985 tax return? When did those discussions take place? What was the substance of those discussions? Were those discussions preceded or followed by any personal correspondence between himself and the Taxation Office?

Mr KEATING —Madam Speaker, this is the first question I have been able to draw out of the Leader of the Opposition in about six sitting weeks. It is interesting to see that we have all these developments in the economy and never a question from him but, as soon as there is a bit of playing the man, up he gets. I have had two conversations; the ones I referred to in my statement last evening-that is, one with the Deputy Commissioner in about July and one with the Commissioner when he rang me only to let me know that inquiries had been made.

Mr Howard —And the Deputy Commissioner rang you in July?

Mr KEATING —No, I rang the Deputy. I have directed no correspondence towards him.
