Mr Burr asked the Minister for Transport, upon notice, on 8 October 1986:

(1) What was the (a) consumption and (b) cost of distillate used by the Tasmanian Region of Australian National Railways for each year since 1982-83.

(2) How much of the cost was due to customs or excise duties.

(3) How much of the cost was due to the excise raised through the Australian Bicentennial Road Development Fund.

(4) What has been the nett tonnage hauled in each year since 1982-83.

(5) How many locomotives has the Tasmanian Region operated in each year since 1982-83.

(6) How many of these locomotives were (a) original Tasmanian Government Railways rolling stock and (b) transferred from mainland operations.

(7) Was the distillate used of Australian or overseas origin.

The Australian National Railways Commission has provided the following advice:

(1) The consumption and cost of distillate used by Tasrail since 1982-83 is:

(2) The amount of the cost due to customs or excise duties is:

1982-83 $467,933.29

1983-84 $822,218.81

1984-85 $921,847.98

1985-86 $1,108,599.97.

(3) The amount of the cost due to excise raised through the Australian Bicentennial Road Development Fund at 1c per litre effective from 18.8.82 to 30.6.83 and thereafter 2c per litre is:

1982-83 $83,495.62

1983-84 $187,343.18

1984-85 $187,646.52

1985-86 $178,282.26.

(4) The nett tonnage hauled by Tasrail is:

1982-83 2,031,879 nett tonnes

1983-84 2,198,817 nett tonnes

1984-85 2,219,428 nett tonnes

1985-86 2,185,700 nett tonnes

(5) and (6) Tasrail's locomotive fleet strength is:

One additional locomotive has been transferred from the Mainland since 30.6.86.

A further 16 locomotives have been purchased from Queensland Railways at a cost of $1.79 million. Delivery is due to commence in January 1987.

(7) The origin of the distillate used is uncertain although the main supplier, Ampol Limited, has indicated the origin to be Australian.
