Mr LIONEL BOWEN (Attorney-General)(5.59) —I move:

That the amendment be agreed to.

This amendment is required in respect of clause 30, which deals with existing appointments. This is a case in which the Criminology Research Act had to be amended to enable other appointments to be made. The question was to preserve existing appointments. Accordingly, the purpose of this transitional provision is to preserve the existing appointments of persons to the board of management of the Australian Institute of Criminology and to the Criminology Research Council. This would avoid the need, after the principal Act is amended, for fresh appointments to be made of existing members of the board and existing members of the Council. State members are appointed upon the nomination of appropriate State Ministers. We are preserving the status quo rather than having to make completely fresh appointments because of the Act.
