Mr SPENDER(5.57) —The Opposition supports the amendments. The Attorney-General (Mr Lionel Bowen) has outlined the reasons for them and the only point that needs to be made from this side of the House is to stress again our support for the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation and to say that it is a pity that the Government support given to ASIO does not extend to the Left, which still regards ASIO as something which it would get rid of rather than have around. We need ASIO, and I know that many Government members would take the same view. Unfortunately, quite a few members take quite the opposite view and that is something that needs to be said again and again so that Australians will understand that on the Government benches, for all the declared unanimity, there are three separate factions on matters such as ASIO. It is a pity that some of them do not come into the House from time to time and say what they really think.

Question resolved in the affirmative.
