Mr Blunt asked the Prime Minister, upon notice, on 20 October 1986:

Has the Government considered renegotiating the lease with the US Government for the facilities at Pine Gap on a year by year basis.

Mr Hawke —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

The Joint Defence Space Research Facility at Pine Gap does not operate under a lease and such an idea is incompatible with the concept of jointness that is embodied in the Agreement governing the Facility's operations. The Agreement provides that when the present non-terminable period expires in October 1987, the Agreement continues in force unless either Party gives due notice of termination. The Government does not at present see any need to alter that arrangement.
