(Question No. 4755)

Mr Connolly asked the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, upon notice, on 10 October 1986:

(1) Has he received representations from the Committee to Defend Black Rights.

(2) Has he been requested to initiate a Royal Commission into the deaths of 19 Aborigines in police custody since 1981.

(3) Has his Department carried out investigations into this matter; if so, what was the outcome.

(4) Is he able to say whether the Attorney-General has carried out similar investigations; if so, what was that outcome.

(5) Will the Government initiate the Royal Commission into this matter.

Mr Holding —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) Yes.

(2) Yes.

(3) The Department has investigated the deaths in custody that have been brought to its notice.

(4) No.

(5) I have agreed to consider evidence gathered by the Committee to Defend Black Rights with a view to determining whether a Federal inquiry is appropriate.
