Mr Lloyd asked the Minister for Communications, upon notice, on 9 November 1983 :

How many (a) official post offices have been (i) closed or (ii) altered to non- official post offices and (b) non-official post offices have been closed, in each electoral division since 5 March 1983.


Mr Duffy —The answer to the honourable member's question, based on advice received from the Australian Postal Commission, is as follows:

Because the statistics sought are collated by Australia Post on a quarterly basis, the answers below relate to the period 5 March to 30 September 1983.

(a) (i) Nil.

(a) (ii) Twelve official post offices have been changed to the non-official method of operation. The electorates in which these were located are listed below:

Calare 1, Capricornia 1, Grey 1, Gwydir 1, Hume 2, Maranoa 1, Paterson 1, Port Adelaide 1, Riverina 1, Wakefield 2.

(b) Thirty-four non-official post offices have been closed. The electorates in which these were located are listed below:

Barker 2, Calare 1, Corangamite 1, Cowper 1, Curtin 1, Fremantle 1, Forrest 4, Grey 4, Hughes 2, Indi 1, Kalgoorlie 1, Kennedy 1, Leichardt 1, Lilley 1, Maranoa 2, Moore 1, O'Connor 2, Phillip 1, Shortland 1, Stirling 1, Wakefield 2, Wannon 1, Wide Bay 1.
