Mr LEO McLEAY —The Treasurer will recall my recent representations to him on behalf of Ashfield Council in my electorate regarding the disallowance of the banking debits Act that was allowed--

Mr Howard —Can't you get your dorothy's right?

Mr LEO McLEAY —It is not a dorothy dixer.

Mr SPEAKER —Order! I suggest that the honourable member get on with his question .

Mr LEO McLEAY —Is the Treasurer aware that Ashfield Council and, no doubt, other local government authorities have had their exemption from the bank accounts debits tax taken away from them on the basis that they conduct trading operations-to wit, in the case of Ashfield Council, a municipal swimming pool? Will the Treasurer advise the Parliament what action the Government will take to ensure that those exemptions are restored so that local government authorities which provide assets to their constituents are not required to pay this tax?

Mr KEATING —I was not aware that a local government body could lose its exemption by virtue of the fact that it was running an enterprise or providing a service for a fee as part of its operations. If that is the case, as I have informed the House recently, we are in the process-as we said we would-of reviewing the bank accounts debits tax. If it pleases the honourable gentleman, in respect of his own municipality that he mentions, I will include in that review or make subject to that review the operation of the tax in respect of local government bodies as it applies to those bodies which operate certain categories of business.
