Question No. 790

Mr Rocher asked the Minister for Housing and Construction, upon notice, on 16 November 1983:

(1) Has the Standards Association of Australia Draft Uniform Code for Earthquake Resistance Buildings, been adopted by his Department.

(2) Are the provisions of the Code included in all designs undertaken by his Department, or are they only applied to buildings to be erected in identified seismic zones.

(3) Is he able to say which design authorities in the States have adopted the Code for all design work within their jurisdiction.

Mr Hurford —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) The Department of Housing and Construction has adopted the Standards Association of Australia Code for the 'Design of Earthquake Resistant Buildings' since its issue in 1979.

(2) The provisions of the Code apply, and are applied, only to buildings to be erected in identified seismic zones. Very special facilities outside the seismic zones may be designed for individually assessed earthquake loads.

(3) No. Information is not available on the attitude of all the many different design authorities in the States to the Code. However it is known that Western Australia is the only State to adopt the Code in building legislation.
