Question No. 619

Mr Lloyd asked the Minister representing the Minister for Industry and Commerce , upon notice, on 13 October 1983:

Is the Minister able to say whether local manufacturers will be able to handle the demand for the production and supply of FM radio transmitters in a reasonable time, when supplementary commercial FM licences are granted?

Mr John Brown —The Minister for Industry and Commerce has provided the following answer to the honourable member's question:

No. I am advised that FM broadcast transmitters are not currently being manufactured in Australia, but there is capability to do so if there were sufficient commercial incentive. This would depend on, for example, the number and rate of applications for supplementary licences and the rate at which licences are issued. At this stage it is not possible to make an accurate prediction on these points.
