Mr BEAZLEY (Special Minister of State)(4.53) —It applies in both circumstances. One cannot describe oneself as Independent with the following name that is related to any other registered party. Therefore one cannot describe oneself as Independent Labor. However, if for example one wanted to describe oneself as Independent Tasmanian or Independent Western Australian or, if there is no socialist party, Independent Socialist, Independent Monarchist or whatever, one is quite entitled to do it.


Mr Hodgman —Independent atheist republican?


Mr BEAZLEY —Or something like that, such as, socialist atheist republican or atheist republican socialist. One can probably use all of those names although one would have difficulty with the acronym of one of them because other prohibitions deal with that problem.
