(2) What allowance will these statistics make for foreign shareholdings in nominee companies, which in turn hold equity in companies involved in these areas.

Mr Keating —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) The Australian Bureau of Statistics resumed publication of statistics on the level of foreign ownership and control in Australian industries on 7 September 1983 with the release of a study of the mining industry and selected mineral processing industries for 1981-82.

Present plans for production of foreign participation statistics in respect of other industries and activities include:

Expected

Reference publication Industry

year date

Manufacturing 1982-83 Late 1984 General Insurance 1983-84 Late 1985 Life Insurance 1983-84 Late 1985 Registered Financial Corporations (including finance companies) 1983-84 Late 1985 Mineral Exploration 1984-85 Late 1986 Research and Experimental De- velopment 1984-85 Late 1986

In view of the relative strength of user demand for foreign participation statistics in respect of particular industries and activities, it has not been possible to include advertising, tourist accommodation and manufacturing (large enterprise groups) in the present work program which extends to 1986.

(2) All significant foreign shareholdings in (or held by) nominee companies will be identified and taken into account in the compilation of these statistics .
