Question No. 464

Mr Blanchard asked the Minister representing the Minister for Social Security, upon notice, on 7 September 1983:

What is the estimated time of waiting for (a) aged persons and (b) disabled persons accommodation in each State for (i) residential untis, (ii) hostels.

Dr Blewett —The Minister for Social Security has provided the following answer to the honourable member's question:

Under the Aged or Disabled Persons Homes Act and Aged or Disabled Persons Hostels Act, my department subsidises the construction of self-contained units, hostels and nursing homes for aged or disabled people. The administration of the homes, however, including the recording of a waiting list for the accommodation, is solely a matter for the management of the home, and such statistics are not supplied to my department.

I would add that organisations' waiting lists would not necessarily reflect true need for such accommodation. In some cases, aged or disabled people register their names with several different homes, and in other cases, when a person's name is reached on the list, they may change their mind, not wishing to move into the home at that time.
