Question No. 196

Mr McVeigh asked the Minister for Primary Industry, upon notice, on 19 May 1983 :

Did he state in a Press statement of 17 January 1983, that a rural adjustment scheme needed a major injection of funds right now; if so, why has the Government not provided that injection of funds, particularly as its policies for agriculture undertake to restore rural adjustment funds to at least those levels existing prior to the Review of Commonwealth Functions.

Mr Kerin —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

On 7 June 1983 I announced that the Government would provide $35m for the funding of Parts A and C of the rural adjustment scheme in 1983-84. In addition, the Commonwealth has agreed to provide Queensland and New South Wales with up to $11m in 1983-84 under Part B of the rural adjustment scheme as carry-on assistance to cane growers. The 1983-84 allocation for rural adjustment assistance contrasts with an average annual expenditure of $16.9m in the previous four years by the former Government.
