Question No. 69

Mr McVeigh asked the Minister for Primary Industry, upon notice, on 4 May 1983:

(1) Did the Government undertake during the election campaign to provide $4m in the 1st year, rising to a minimum of $20m by the 4th year, for a National Soil Conservation Scheme.

(2) If so, when will the 1st payments be made to the States under the scheme.

(3) Will payments be made directly to primary producers under the scheme.

(4) Who will determine what projects are to be funded under the scheme.

(5) Given the Government's often stated sense of urgency about soil conservation, will the scheme be operational, and funds flowing, by 30 June 1983 ; if so, what sums will be paid to the States by the end of 1982-83.

Mr Kerin —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) Yes.

(2) (3) (4) and (5) A sum of $1m was allocated for the National Soil Conservation Program in the 1983-84 Budget. The Program will be established in co-operation with the States and developed in accordance with land use principles and national water resource priorities. Details of the Program will be announced when I finalise discussions with the States on the matter.
