Question No. 62

Mr McVeigh asked the Minister for Primary Industry, upon notice, on 4 May 1983:

Does the Government still remain committed to its promise not to introduce a sales tax or an excise tax on wine; if so, over what period does this promise extend.

Mr Kerin —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

The Treasurer announced in the Budget Speech the immediate imposition of an excise duty on grape spirit used for fortifying wine. Numerous winemakers have raised a particular objection to collection of this excise duty prior to the sale of the wine products in which the spirit is used.

The Government is prepared to consider industry views on this matter and to this end I have sought a detailed submission from the Australian Wine and Brandy Producers' Association.
