Question No. 58

Mr McVeigh asked the Minister for Primary Industry, upon notice, on 4 May 1983:

(1) Given his stated commitment to supporting the research needs of the wool industry, will existing funding for wool research be (a) maintained, (b) increased or (c) decreased in 1982-83.

(2) Will funding levels be (a) maintained, (b) increased or (c) decreased in 1983-84.

Mr Kerin —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1) Finance for the full program of wool research approved for 1982-83 will be available for expenditure by grantees from the Wool Research Trust Fund.

(2) On 22 July 1983 I announced grants totalling $20.8m from the Wool Research Trust Fund for sheep and wool research in 1983-84. These grants, recommended by the Australian Wool Corporation reflected an increase of more than 11 per cent on the $18.7m allocated in 1982-83.
