Mr HAWKE (Prime Minister) —by leave-During Question Time today I told the House that the Roxby Downs joint venture partners had not yet sought development approval. That statement was based on information provided to me today by my Department. I have since been informed that the joint venturers wrote to the Minister for Resources and Energy (Senator Walsh) on 1 July advising that they had environmental approval from the South Australian Government and foreign investment approval from the previous Commonwealth Government and were seeking development approval. Senator Walsh in reply said that the Government would consider the matter.

I understand that Western Mining Corporation Ltd has not sought approval to negotiate contracts based on mining from Roxby Downs and that it is unlikely to do so before mid-1984 at the earliest. Western Mining has also advised that it has no difficulty with the framework for consultations and decision with the party and the Government to which I referred in the House today. I am indebted for the agreement to allow me to make that statement. I regret that on the basis of the information that had been provided to me the statement I made was not entirely accurate. I have taken this first opportunity of putting the position accurately before the House.
