Question No. 405


Mr Porter asked the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, upon notice, on 25 August 1983:

Did he announce on 24 March 1983 that he had authorised payment of emergency assistance of up to $20 000 to the Muladja Aboriginal community, and subsequently advise the Senate Estimates Committee that his Department had received no other request during 1982-83 for similar assistance; if so, (a) how are applications for such assistance assessed, (b) what level of assistance is available, (c) who will be eligible and (d) is assistance in the form of a grant or loan.


Mr Holding —The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

Yes.

(a) On their merits.

(b) To the extent of savings firstly available in the respective region and secondly nationally.

(c) Communities affected by a natural disaster providing that with due regard to expedience the assistance has the support of the local NAC representative and providing alternative assistance has been sought through appropriate State and Federal Natural Disaster Relief Funds.

(d) In the form of a grant.
