Mr ALDRED —Can the Minister for Defence Support inform this House why his negotiations with the Indonesian Government to supply that Government with military equipment from Australia have now been halted? Can the Minister affirm that the proposed value of the deal was around $10m?

Mr HOWE —The answer to the question is that, to my knowledge, no negotiations with the Indonesian Government that may be taking place have been halted by my direction. It is true that I have previously raised the issue of the guidelines concerning foreign military sales within our own region. I believe that that is an issue that requires consideration and careful thought, but in terms of any particular cessation of discussions or negotiations with Indonesia, that has certainly not occurred at my instruction.
