Question No. 252

Mr Lloyd asked the Minister for Communications, upon notice, on 26 May 1983:

Has he, his Department, or Australia Post, determined a definition of a 'letter ' and 'electronic mail'; if so, what are the definitions; if not, are such definitions being considered.

Mr Duffy —The answer to the honourable member's question, based on advice from the Australian Postal Commission, is as follows:

The question of a legal definition of a letter has been under consideration by Australia Post for some time. The matter has not been reviewed by the Government .

Any necessary definition of the term 'electronic mail' will be considered in the drafting of amended legislation to give effect to the Government's recent decision on that matter.
