To the Honourable the Speaker, and Members of the House of Representatives in Parliament assembled: The humble petition of the undersigned electors of Australia respectfully showeth:

That the 26th January, 1788, is the date of the first white settlement in Australia, and therefore marks the beginning of modern Australia, and this event marks the most appropriate date on which to celebrate our national day.

Your petitioners therefore humbly pray that the Parliament will determine that Australia Day is to be celebrated on the twenty-sixth day of January each year, and that a public holiday will be declared on that day, regardless of which day of the week is the 26th.

And your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray.
