Mr HURFORD (Minister for Housing and Construction)(11.20) —I move:

That, in accordance with the provisions of the Public Works Committee Act 1969, the following proposed work be referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works for consideration and report: RAAF Base Williamtown, N.S.W.-FA- 18 Hornet facilities development.

This proposal is for the provision of facilities required to meet the need of the tactical fighter force during and subsequent to the re-equipment of the force with FA-18 fighter aircraft together with works needed for the eventual relocation of No. 3 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, from Butterworth, Malaysia. The proposal comprises the following elements: Facilities for No. 481 Maintenance Squadron; fighter unit facilities for No. 77 Squadron and No. 3 Squadron; facilities for No. 2 Operational Conversion Unit; Army parachute training school; administration and domestic facilities; sleeping accommodation; off-base married quarter accommodation; and associated engineering works and services.

The estimated cost of the proposal at April 1983 prices is $90.74m. The estimated cost does not include a number of time critical facilities to the value of $15m which the House resolved only yesterday in a separate motion to exempt from Committee consideration on the grounds of urgency. It is nice on this occasion, however, to refer these matters to the Public Works Committee as we value the scrutiny of that Committee. I table plans of the proposed work.
