Legislation / BILLS—THE PARLIAMENTARY PROCESS / Form of bill

Activating clause

When provisions of a bill are contained in a schedule to the bill ( see p. 340), they are given legislative effect by a provision in a preceding clause. Current practice is for the insertion of an ‘activating’ clause at the beginning of the bill (usually clause 3) providing that each Act specified in a schedule is amended or repealed as set out in the schedule and that any other item in a schedule has effect according to its terms.
