A Bill for an Act to amend the Native Title Act 1993 to further the interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, and for related purposes
The Parliament of Australia enacts:
This Act may be cited as the Native Title Amendment (Reform) Act 2011 .
This Act commences on the day after this Act receives Royal Assent.
Each Act that is specified in a Schedule to this Act is amended or repealed as set out in the applicable items in the Schedule concerned, and any other item in a Schedule to this Act has effect according to its terms.
The objects of this Act are:
(a) to refer to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and provide for principles of the Declaration to be applied in decision-making under the Native Title Act 1993 ; and
(b) to implement reforms to the Native Title Act 1993
to improve the effectiveness of the native title system for
Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders.
